Background

Alcohol harm is an obstacle to sustainable development, adversely affecting 13 of 17 SDGs. Alcohol is responsible for 3.3 million deaths per year globally and, particularly among young adults, is a major contributor to disability adjusted years of life lost. Leading up to the 2018 High-Level meetings, two WHO high-level ministerial conferences addressed alcohol. The Montevideo roadmap on NCDs as development priority addressed the importance of action on alcohol as NCDs risk factor and the Moscow declaration to end TB highlighted the significance of tackling alcohol as risk factor for TB.

Alcohol’s burden on public health and UHC is even greater. It is a major risk factor for interpersonal violence as well as road traffic accidents. The economic burden of alcohol is substantial, estimated at between 1 – 2% of GDP, negatively impacting governments’ capacities to ensure health for all and jeopardizing universal health coverage.

This affects all WHO regions – as the event co-sponsors show.
