According to new findings, in the United Kingdom there are more women who have a problem with alcohol than those who do not.
The latest AUDIT survey found that 55% of women in the UK who use alcohol have a problem, scoring eight on the World Health Organisation’s Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT).
AUDIT is a ten-question test – scores of over seven for women and eight for men indicate a strong likelihood of hazardous or harmful alcohol intake. Scores of 13 – 20 suggest different levels of alcohol dependence.
At the upper end of the scale, 14% of women scored a concerning 16 on the AUDIT test. This figure for women from the United Kingdom was much higher than the global average, which is 9.6%. Even the global average of almost 10% using alcohol in these hazardous amounts is troubling – especially given the alcohol industry targeting women aggressively with marketing.
