For lack of TTIP transparency, Green party sues EU
Lawmakers from Germany‘s Green Party have filed a legal claim against the European Commission to press for more transparency in relation to Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) deal being negotiated between the European Union and the United States.
The claim was filed with the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg.
Once finalized, TTIP would create the world‘s largest free trade zone incorporating 800 million people. But critics fear that it could water down consumer protection provisions.
Green party lawmakers argue that the secrecy regulations surrounding TTIP documents should be amended.
Currently, only US and EU lawmakers are allowed to view them with others employees present. Lawmakers from other countries are bound by a confidentiality agreement and have to give up their mobile phones before viewing them.
