Smoking, lack of physical activity  and alcohol are the most important causes for premature deaths in Denmark.

A new, comprehensive report by the Danish Health Authority (Sundhedsstyrelsen) shows brand new data about how big the burden is of 12 risk factors concerning indicators such as mortality, hospital visits and days on sick leave. The report is entitled: “Disease burden in Denmark – risk factors.”

Especially three, out of the 12 risk factors studied are responsible for premature mortality in Denmark.

  1. Smoking causes 13.600 deaths per year
  2. Lack of physical activity causes 6.000 deaths per year
  3. Alcohol consumption above recommended limits causes 2.900 deaths per year

All of these risk factors are largely preventable.

Among these 12 risk factors that burden the health of the Danish people, smoking, physical inactivity and alcohol are having clearly appear to be the most important direct causes of premature mortality in Denmark,” says Jette Jul Bruun, Sundhedsstyrelsen.
