Tackling alcohol harm will be a focus of the Estonian EU Presidency

Estonia will focus its attention on matters related to alcohol policy during its presidency of the European Council in the second half of 2017, according to Estonia’s Minister of Health and Labour Jevgeni Ossinovski.

Ossinovski said on social media that EU Health Commissioner Vytenis Andriukaitis acknowledged Estonia’s plans to toughen alcohol policy domestically during a meeting in Brussels.

We agreed that within the framework of the presidency, Estonia will put the focus on several Europe-wide topics of alcohol policy from online marketing to labeling of alcohol,” the Estonian minister stated.

Estonia has said that it will announce the priorities of its presidency shortly before it begins on July 1, 2017. The current list of priorities identifies advancing the internal market, primarily the digital single market, and the neighbourhood policy as items which Estonia intends to focus on during its presidency.
