Bihar, India: Alcohol Industry Compelled To Dispose Stock

Bihar Alcohol Ban: Supreme Court denies deadline extension for alcohol industry to dispose of their stock outside Bihar. The refusal effectively hampers the alcohol industry from selling more alcohol in Bihar’s neighboring states.

The Bihar government says Rs5,000 crore of alcohol had already been destroyed and there was hardly any stock left with manufacturers and sellers. The apex court had earlier granted time until 31 July to the alcohol industry to get rid of stocks in light of the alcohol ban imposed in the state in 2015.

The Nitish Kumar government in Bihar had imposed a ban on alcohol in the state from April 1, 2016. And on October 2, 2016, Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar notified the Bihar Prohibition and Excise Act, 2016, banning sale and consumption of alcohol including Indian-Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) as well as spiced and domestic liquor.
