NEWS: EU: Liquor Industry Lets Down Consumers (Again)

Europe’s liquor industry declared plans to list the number of calories and ingredients in their products. But the latest move is not nearly enough and has received heavy criticism from public health experts.
Alcoholic beverages have been exempt from EU labeling rules that are in force for all food and non-alcoholic drinks. Instead of regulating the alcohol industry and requiring effective labelling, the European Commission decided to rely on self-regulation allowing the alcohol industry to come up with their own plan to regulate itself.
The European consumers organization BEUC has said that, with Europe facing an obesity crisis, calorie content labeling for alcohol was a necessity.
In March 2018, the sector came up with an initiative to provide more information about energy content and ingredients but critics said at the time that if much of the information was available only online, it was not realistic to expect all consumers to have access to it…

NEWS: EU: AB InBev Fined For Trade Violations

The European Commission has fined beer giant AB InBev for trade violations. The world’s largest beer maker was fined €200.4 million for price fixing by hindering cheaper imports of its Jupiler beer from the Netherlands into Belgium.
The European Commission found that AB InBev, based in Belgium, used its dominating market power to restrict the possibility for supermarkets and wholesalers to buy Jupiler beer at lower prices in the Netherlands and to import it into Belgium. AB InBev removed the French version of mandatory information from the labelling and changed the design and size of beer cans to make it harder to sell to Belgian consumers…

NEWS: ANPAA, France: Exposing Big Alcohol Lobbying

Association Nationale de Prevention en Alcoologie et Adictiologie (ANPAA) recently released a report on the alcohol industry lobbying practices in France. The ANPAA, a long-time partner of IOGT International, reports at the heart of these industry lobbying initiatives is a strategy to position itself as an “actor of prevention” to the public authorities so that they can disseminate their own prevention messages, focusing solely on individual responsibility of consumers. The impact of the environment on consumption (advertising, accessibility, price) is deliberately ignored, as is any proposal for binding measures…

NEWS: EU: Household Alcohol Spending Nearly €130 Billion

In 2017, households in the European Union (EU) spent 1.6% of their total consumption expenditure on alcoholic beverages. This represents a total expenditure of over €130 billion, equivalent to 0.9% of EU GDP or over €300 per EU inhabitant.
