Uganda: UYDEL Brings National Attention to Alcohol Awareness Month

Our members from the Uganda Youth Development Link (UDEYL) worked heart-driven in bringing national attention to the Alcohol Awareness Month – April in Uganda.

In lieu of the awareness month, UYDEL appeared on national TV with Executive Director Rogers and Kasirya and Ms. Apofia Nabirye, a former beneficiary and peer educator of UYDEL, who shared her story on recovery from alcohol use disorder to NTV Uganda.

Rogers and his team are dedicated to preventing and reducing alcohol in Uganda and promoting development in that way. The UYDEL team conducts many awareness campaigns as well as offering rehabilitation services to young people at the grassroots level. Apofia is one of the many young people UYDEL has supported to recover from substance use problems.

UYDEL is advocating for Uganda to join Kenya in officially recognizing alcohol use disorder as a disease.

As part of the awareness month UYDEL also celebrated an Alcohol-Free Weekend from April 5 to 7, 2019, together with other NGO partners. The aim was to raise public awareness of the use of alcohol and how it affects individuals, families, businesses and communities. During the Alcohol-Free Weekend, UDEYL extended an open invitation to all Ugandans to engage in three alcohol-free days. Those individuals or families who experience difficulty or discomfort in this 72-hour period were supported to contact substance use disorder professionals to receive help with their problems.
