Nearly half of Vietnamese men consume alcohol at hazardous levels

A study released by the Ministry of Health in Vietnam showed that the numer of male alcohol users increased by 11% since 2010. The number of female alcohol users in country increased by 6% compared to 2010.

The study was conducted in all 63 provinces of Vietnam with the participation of some 4,000 Vietnamese citizens, aged 18 to 69.

The results of the study are alarming:

  • 44% of men are using alcohol at a hazardous levels
  • About 50% of alcohol user drove after using alcohol
  • More than 40% of road fatalities or some 4,000 deaths are related to driving under the influence of alcohol

Over the past decade, while global alcohol use almost stayed the same, Vietnam – a target for the alcohol industry – was one of the few countries with increasing consumption. Domestic beer production is on a steady increase driven by aggressive marketing campaigns by the alcohol industry, despite the government had imposed higher taxes on alcohol earlier this year.

According to the World Health Organization, alcohol is one of the 10 leading causes of death worldwide.
