New Zealand: Liquor Fund-Raiser Put on Hold

The highly controversial and criticized liquor fund-raiser organized by New Zealand Labour MP Louisa Wall, in partnership with alcohol front group Spirits New Zealand has been postponed.

“The Whisky & Gin” event was intended to raise funds for the NZ Gynaecological Cancer Foundation. Many public health advocates condemned the event considering the known relationship between alcohol and cancer.

New Zealand: MP Under Big Alcohol Influence

Alcohol is a risk factor for over 7 different cancer types including the most common in New Zealand, breast and bowel cancer.

MP Wall seems to be under the influence of Big Alcohol as she promoted not only the event but also partnering with the alcohol industry. Despite the contradiction in partnering to reduce harm from alcohol with the industry that creates the product which causes the harm.

The event was supposed to happen on Wednesday, September 25. However, due to lack of support the event has been postponed as not enough of the $70 tickets were sold.
